We will have lunch together (pay for your own) before attending the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation event called “Every Child Matters” put together by Connections Community Services at the Richmond Cultural Centre (7700 Minoru Gate, Richmond) with guest speaker: Beatrice Silver, Residential School Survivor. This event allows us to understand and commemorate the history and legacy of the residential school system. We will honour the resilience, dignity and strength of survivors and intergenerational survivors and remember the children who never came home. It’s a chance to engage and educate us, the newcomers from Hong Kong, about the BC and Canadian colonial history and how it has and continues to impact Indigenous communities. The event will commence at 1pm. The plan is to have lunch at Wo Fung Noodle House (車仔麵) from 11:30am to 12:30pm, and then walk ourselves to Richmond Cultural Centre. Sheila is a teacher by profession and we are thrilled to have Sheila join us with her wealth of knowledge and experience. On May 31, let’s go beyond acknowledgement and learn about Indigenous history while celebrating culture with drumming and song. Some of the activities on that day include a presentation of the Indigenous history, participation in Indigenous singing and drumming as well as doing a game about the Indigenous culture. For those interested to join for lunch after, we can walk over to Aberdeen Centre and do lunch at the food court. September 30, 2021, marks the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day that coincides with Orange Shirt Day. It recognizes the tragic legacy of residential schools, the missing children, the families left behind and the survivors of these institutions.

The eagle to represent First Nations The narwhal to represent Inuit The beaded flower to represent Métis The stars to represent the children who never made it home from residential schools Among the various visual elements illustrating Indigenous cultures, the circle is at the centre, which represents being together in spirit of reconciliation. Burnaby Village Museum is an open-air museum in Burnaby. It is a reconstructed 1920s village, containing 31 full scale buildings, with costumed staff demonstrating traditional trades. Some of the buildings are original heritage buildings, moved from other locations in the community and restored; while others are replica buildings, created to house specific displays and artifacts.

It is located next to Nat Bailey Stadium - originally built in 1951 as Capilano Stadium, it was renamed Nat Bailey Stadium in 1978 for Vancouver restaurateur and founder of the White Spot restaurant chain Nat Bailey after his death to honour his tireless effort to promote baseball in Vancouver. This farmer’s market is closed to one of the biggest parks in Vancouver - QE (Queen Elizabeth) Park.
